Governor Brown’s GHG Reductions Plan Emphasizes The Importance Of Investing In Natural Infrastructure Solutions

SACRAMENTO — Governor Jerry Brown issued an Executive Order today that solidifies California’s commitment to fighting global warming.

This Executive Order will significantly accelerate greenhouse gas reductions in California, specifically in the near-term 2020-2030 window, setting an aggressive reduction target of 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030.

Laurie Wayburn, President of the Pacific Forest Trust, on Governor Brown’s Executive order regarding 2030 climate goals, released the following statement in response to the new executive order:

“We applaud Governor Brown for continuing California’s bold leadership; preparing for and combatting climate change.

The Governor’s executive order clearly recognizes the importance of forests and other natural lands in meeting our long-term climate goals, both to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and also to help the state adapt to a changing climate. Specifically calling out the key role the state’s natural infrastructure plays in meeting the state’s climate targets, the Governor also tied climate actions helping meet water supply and other essential adaptation goals.

Smart investments in forests — the largest, most expandable, proven terrestrial carbon sink — will help us meet these aggressive GHG reduction goals, while also helping to safeguard key sources of California’s water supply and helping wildlife adapt and survive.

We are glad the Executive Order specifically states that natural infrastructure solutions should be prioritized, and we expect that the May Revise of the Governor’s budget will include additional investments that help nature be part of our climate solutions and water security.”
