General: This is an associate/entry-level conservation project position that includes involvement in all aspects of acquiring and stewarding conservation easements. Work will be focused on California, but could include projects as needed in Oregon and Washington. Tasks will include participation in outreach to landowners and the forestry community, in the creation of conservation plans and development of the conservation easement terms, project closings, creation of monitoring plans, and on-going monitoring of easement terms. Depending on the needs of the organization and evolving opportunities, different aspects of this job may be emphasized over time.
QUALIFICATIONS: The job requires a person with a background in natural resource management, forestry, real estate and/or law; with excellent communication skills; strong computer skills, including GIS experience; well-organized and capable of addressing multiple tasks flexibly. Prefer Bachelor’s degree or higher in forestry or related natural resource. Comfortable and effective in small but busy office setting. Committed to mission of PFT.
Tasks and Responsibilities: Reports to the Stewardship Manager and works closely with Conservation Project Manager, Vice President of Conservation and other PFT conservation staff to:
Conduct research, fieldwork and mapping for conservation assessments of privately owned forest tracts
Provide support for the acquisition of specific conservation easements and fee title lands on forestlands primarily in CA, or in OR and WA as assigned. Using PFT’s policies and procedures, assist senior project personnel in achieving quality control and scheduling goals. Prepare drafts of key documents as needed
Conduct fieldwork on properties on which conservation easements are being established to identify and map forest resources, vegetation types and land uses. Write property and resource descriptions for baseline reports for conserved forestlands. Prepare necessary maps and tables
Participate as a key team member in effective stewardship of PFT’s conservation easements, including landowner communications and relationship management, responses to landowner requests for approvals or questions on easement terms, annual monitoring site visits and other monitoring activities, preparation of reports, and related tasks
Participate in outreach to private landowners, foresters and other natural resource professionals and regional forest stakeholders to develop conservation easement and fee title acquisition projects with PFT
Maintain PFT conservation project database and project files
Assist as needed in preparation of project grant/contract proposals and reports
Undertake GIS analysis and map-making for PFT conservation assessments, easements, fee title acquisitions, strategic planning and other programmatic needs. Work with contractors for the same, as needed
Other tasks as may be required
Location: PFT’s main office is located in San Francisco, CA. Satellite offices are in Corvallis, OR, and Seattle, WA.
