Know The Facts.
Four out of every five forests in the Lower 48 states are privately owned. These forests deliver many essential benefits including water, wildlife, wilderness, working landscapes and a well-balanced climate. Tragically, more than 1.5 million acres of these forestlands are converted to shopping malls, subdivisions and other forms of development each year.
Know Our Story.
Since 1993, the Pacific Forest Trust has been dedicated to sustaining America's private working forests and safeguarding their many public benefits.
Yet, the future and fate of these forests is really everyone's concern. So, we ask you to join us and share your support. Together, we can ensure working forests will continue to work wonders for us all.

Working Forests, Winning Climate
PFT Leads Broad Coalition in Call for Land Conservation Funding from Federal Climate Bill
More than 70 diverse groups from around the country have joined our call to U.S. Senate leaders, asking them to slow the conversion of domestic lands. By setting aside allowances in climate and energy legislation to fund conservation easements, lawmakers would keep working forests and agricultural landscapes in production, while forever conserving their ability to provide a broad range of ecosystem services ranging from sustainably harvested wood to a well-balanced climate. COP 15

Reflecting on Copenhagen Climate Talks:
‘A Bright Side for Forests’
PFT Board Secretary and international forestry consultant Andrea Tuttle provides analysis on the outcome of international climate talks in Copenhagen, where delegates from nearly 200 nations met in December to negotiate a successor to the Kyoto Protocol. The summit didn’t produce a binding climate treaty – but has resulted in some encouraging agreements on provisions for forests. Read Tuttle’s analysis on our blog or check out the Accounting Matters poster Tuttle and PFT Policy Project Manager Emily Russell-Roy presented at the COP15 Forest Day.

Lawmakers Approve $1 million for CSNM Transfer
U.S. lawmakers have passed a new Interior Department appropriations bill providing $1 million to fund the transfer of 955 acres we’re holding in trust for addition to the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument (CSNM) in southern Oregon. When the land conveys to public ownership in 2010 we’ll have transferred more than half of the 5,000 acres we’ve purchased from willing sellers in order to complete the original vision of the nation’s first monument designated for its regional biodiversity.

Van Eck Button
Emission Reduction Accounting Protocol
Co-Developed by PFT Now Set for National Use
With good accounting comes credibility for forest-based emission reductions projects designed to fight climate change. A revised version of standards to ensure that credibility have been adopted by the California Air Resources Board and will now be used to register forest-based carbon projects from around the country. Adopted on Sept. 24, the Climate Action Reserve’s Forest Project Accounting Protocol is the first government-approved forest carbon accounting standard with national applicability. Learn more about it in our media release or on our blog.
